Hot Chocolate Floats

December 22, 2019 by Nicole Collins

It's Day 10 in our 12 Days of Beverages challenge!

Can you believe it? Only 2 days left!

We've made so many fun drinks so far, and the best is still yet to come!

Today's drink is extra special for many reasons. It checks off the boxes of easy and delicious. But, it also makes us ask a very important question.

Is it a drink? Is it a dessert? Does it matter?

NOPE!

Today's drink is more method than recipe, because you can basically use any flavor combination your heart desires.

So today, we're making Hot Chocolate Floats!

Floats seem like such a retro drink, don't they? Basically, a float is a beverage poured over ice cream. So, think root beer float. Or a Black Cow (cola poured over vanilla ice cream). So I thought, why not contrast temperatures too by combining warm hot chocolate and cold ice cream?

We start with your favorite prepared hot chocolate. You can make homemade, use a powdered mix, use a k cup mix...whatever you love. Then, we're going to plop a scoop of ice cream into our hot chocolate, and top it with some whipped cream. That's it! Hot Chocolate Float complete!

For the ice cream, the flavor combos are endless. I chose to use the Mint Cookie Triopolitan flavor by Turkey Hill for a few reasons. 1. You get three flavors in one (chocolate, cookies and cream, and mint chip), so why not! 2. Since mint chip is one of the flavors in this mix, and we all know mint makes the perfect, seasonal Christmasy flavor! And, 3. Three flavors = Three colors which = super pretty!

Because we're mixing hot and cold, the ice cream melts into the hot chocolate making our drink extra creamy and delicious. I usually start with a spoon for the first couple of slurps, then switch over to a straw for optimal drinking conditions!

And, if we're going to indulge in hot chocolate and ice cream at the same time, we might as well rim our glass with hot fudge...right?!?!?! Cause that's what I did, and that's what I highly suggest you do. Talk about a treat!

Speaking of treats, let's take a walk down memory lane and review the other drinkable treats we've made so far:

OK, everyone! Just a few more sleeps until the big guy gets here!

So until then, let's drink!

Hot Chocolate Float

Serves: 1 Print

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup prepared hot chocolate

  • ¼ cup (1 ice cream scoop) ice cream (I use Turkey Hill Triopolitan Mint Cookie)

  • hot fudge and whipped cream, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Melt a heaping spoonful of hot fudge on a small plate in 10 second intervals until pourable. Dip rim of your mug in hot fudge, if desired.

  2. Pour hot chocolate into prepared mug. Drop 1 scoop of ice cream into the hot chocolate. Garnish with whipped cream, if desired. Serve immediately.

Recipe notes:

*I just use a hot chocolate k cup mix as my hot chocolate base. Any hot chocolate will work whether it's homemade, powdered mix, or k cup.

*You can use your favorite flavor of ice cream. I love the triopolitan, because you get cookies and cream, mint chip, and chocolate all in one scoop. Either of those flavors on their own would be great. So would vanilla or peanut butter swirl. The possibilities are really endless!
