Today, we’re making Walking Apple Pie!

We all know I love a kitschy food trend, and the “walking” treat trend is one of my favorites. It’s previously been limited to desserts and tacos. But recently, I’ve even seen walking subs and sandwiches made with potato chips. I LOVE it.
If you’re not familiar with this trend, it’s as simple as taking a snack sized pack of chips/cookies/etc, loading the bag with whatever toppings would accompany the OG dish, and serving it with plastic utensils to make the meal nice and portable. What started by loading taco toppings into a bag of Doritos has evolved into recipes like what we’re making today.

This one is so easy, it can barely be called a recipe. We need 3 ingredients and it’s assembly only, so literally anyone can make this. If you’re allowed to use scissors, you can make this recipe!

Let’s start with the cookie choice. I like to use mini packs of Great Value brand alphabet cookies from Walmart. These are shortbread cookies, so they’re going to mimic the idea of a pie crust the most closely. However, if you’re looking for a cookie choice that’s less niche, there are some other lovely options. We need a cookie that comes in individual snack packs, so you could use animal crackers, teddy grahams, golden oreos, oatmeal cookies, or even nutter butters if you want to really make things fancy. You could even serve a variety of cookie options if you’re feeding a larger crowd.

Once we’ve selected the cookie, we’re going to crush each baggie of cookies between our hands to break up the cookies. This helps distribute them through the dessert and makes it a little easier to eat. Then, we’re going to cut either the top or the sides off of each bag to turn the cookie bags into a makeshift bowl. Which side to cut is up to you. Cutting off the tops might looks more natural, because the cookie bags will be standing upright. But, cutting off the sides gives you a slightly bigger opening making these a little easier to fill and eat. Either way, use your personal preference there.

I like to stand the bags upright in a baking pan to make them a little easier to fill and transport. But, a big taco holder works for this too. Then, we’re going to grab a can of apple pie filling, and drop a big spoonful into each baggie on top of the crumbled cookies. Now this step is optional, but I like to take a pair of kitchen scissors to the can of pie filling to chop the apples up a little bit. It makes them a little easier to eat, and it helps to distribute the apple a little more evenly between the bags.

To finish these treats, we’ll grab a can of whipped cream then squeeze a nice blob into the center of each bag. And, that’s all the work there is to do! If you want to be extra fancy, you can absolutely finish these with a drizzle of caramel or a sprinkle of toffee chips on top of the whipped cream to add a little extra pizazz. But honestly, these don’t even need it!

To serve, leave the bags in the dish you assembled them in, have some plastic spoons on standby (sometimes I even like to have the spoons sticking out of the bags for extra visual impact), and you’re ready to dig in! These are the absolute perfect sweet treat. They’re simple, they’re inexpensive, they’re flavorful, they’re nostalgic, and they’re absolutely stinkin’ delicious.

If you’re the one that usually gets put on paper towel duty for the family barbeque, this is your time to shine. These little desserts are perfect for end of summer soiree’s, back to school celebrations, or even an after school snack. I promise, anyone can make these!
Ok, everyone! What meal or treat do you want to see “walkified” next?
I hope you enjoy! And, let’s eat!

Walking Apple Pie
Serves: 10 Print
Ingredients:
1 box (10 packs) Great Value Mini Alphabet Cookies
1 can (21 oz) apple pie filling
Canned whipped cream, to taste
Directions:
Crush each bag of cookies in your hands. Cut about a half inch off the side of each bag to turn the bag into a bowl. Arrange the cookie bags in a baking pan to help keep them upright.
Use kitchen scissors to dice up the apples in the pie filling. Add one big spoonful of filling to each cookie bag. Top apples with a squeeze of whipped cream. Serve immediately, and enjoy!
Recipe notes:
*These are best served fresh.
*I really like the Walmart alphabet cookies, because they’re shortbread and most closely resemble pie crust. Other cookie packs that would work include animal cookies, teddy grahams, mini oatmeal cookies, mini golden oreos, or even nutter butters if you really want to mix things up.
*You can either cut the tops or the side off the cookie bags, but you get a little more width to your “bowl” if you cut the sides.
