Today, we’re making Crab Rangoon Pizza!

Guys, I’ve been sitting on this recipe for a hot minute…since the summer actually. And, I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited to share a recipe with you.

Here’s the backstory…a local pizza place near me was offering a limited time crab rangoon special pizza. It was a Detroit style cheese pizza, glazed with sweet chili sauce, topped with actual crab rangoons, then finished with chili crisp and scallions. Now the novelty of this pizza had the locals so crazed, they completely wiped out their crab rangoon vendor. After that, the even more exclusive availability of this pizza made it extra intriguing, and that’s how they suckered me into paying $43 (plus delivery fees) for one pizza. FORTY THREE DOLLARS.

The pizza was delicious in concept, but not necessarily in practice. There was not much crab on the pizza (which is an insult to any Marylander when something is advertised to them as crabby). And the rangoons were glued to the top corner of each slice, so they were a little impractical to eat. I ended up taking them off and just eating them on the side. The pizza was good, but not $43 (plus fees) good. So of course, there was only option I had after eating this pizza.

I had to make it at home myself.

This pizza starts with a batch of my homemade crab rangoon dip. We’ll add some cream cheese, a little mayo, a little sour cream, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, a splash of soy sauce, some garlic powder, scallions, sugar, and black pepper to a bowl. Mix it all together until it’s nice and creamy. Then, fold in some fresh blue crab meat, and give it all a gentle toss. That’s it. Super simple.

Now as a side note, you guys know how I feel about canned crab or fake krab. That’s not the vibe here. If you really really really really had to, imitation crab meat would work as a back up plan. But, really try to get fresh crab meat if you have access to it. The taste is not even comparable.

To assemble our pizza, I used store bought pizza dough simply because it’s easier. But if you have a pizza dough recipe you know and love, feel free to use that. We’ll brush the dough with some sweet chili sauce before schmearing on our crab rangoon dip. Then, we’ll sprinkle a mixture of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses onto the pizza. And, to the oven it goes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly. When the pizza comes out of the oven, we’ll finish it with a drizzle of chili crisp, a sprinkle of sliced green onions, and a pinch of some store bought wonton strips.

This pizza…WOWZA. Incredible doesn’t even begin to describe it. It’s a little sweet, a little savory, a little spicy. It’s crunchy and gooey and creamy. And, we’re not breaking out the magnifying glass to find the crab for this one. There’s a full mouthful of crab in every bite. You want to impress your loved ones for WAY less than $43? Make this pizza. Trust me.

Alright, everyone! What’s the most ridiculous money you’ve ever spent on a food purchase? Make me feel better about myself for spending $43 on bread.

In the meantime, enjoy! And, let’s eat!

Crab Rangoon Pizza

Serves: 8          Print

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb pizza dough, at room temperature

  • ½ tbsp sweet chili sauce

  • ¼ cup whipped cream cheese

  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise

  • 1 tbsp sour cream

  • ½ tsp worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp soy sauce

  • ¼ tsp garlic powder

  • ¼ tsp pepper

  • 1/8 tsp sugar

  • 1 green onion, minced; plus more for garnish

  • 4 oz (about ½ cup, packed) lump blue crab meat, picked through for shells

  • ¾ cup shredded mozzarella

  • ¼ cup shredded cheddar

  • 1 tbsp chili crisp

  • ¼ cup wonton strips

  • Semolina flour or cornmeal, for dusting

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Sprinkle semolina flour over a 12 inch pizza pan to prevent sticking. Stretch pizza dough to fit in the pan. Brush sweet chili sauce all over the surface of the dough, leaving a border for the crust.

  2. To a small bowl, add cream cheese, mayo, sour cream, worcestershire, soy sauce, garlic powder, pepper, sugar, and green onions. Stir to mix until well combined. Add crab meat, and gently mix in until combined. Spread crab dip mixture evenly all over the surface of the pizza dough.

  3. Mix shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses together. Sprinkle evenly over the crab dip.

  4. Bake pizza for 10-15 mins until the crust is golden and the cheese has melted. Finish the pizza with chili crisp, wonton strips, and sliced green onions sprinkled over the surface. Cut into 8 slices, and enjoy!

Recipe notes:

*I like to use store bought refrigerated pizza dough for this recipe. It’s important that you let the dough sit out for at least an hour or two to come to room temp, or you won’t be able to stretch the dough.

*To stretch the dough, I like to press it out in the pan as much as I can with my fingers, pick it up so it’s resting on top of two open fists, and gently stretch outward, then throw it back in the pan and finish pressing/stretching to fill the pan.

*I used store bought wonton strips. But, you could also make them yourself by cutting wonton wrappers into strips and either frying them at 375 degrees for about a minute or baking them at 400 degrees (brushed on both sides with olive oil) for about 3-4 mins.
