Today, we’re making Big Mac Hot Dogs!

What’s more American than a hot dog on the 4th of July?? A BIG MAC HOT DOG ON THE 4TH OF JULY!

Fun fact: when I was little, hot dogs were one of the first foods I learned how to “cook”. Picture 5 yr old me chopping up hot dogs, tossing them in beans, then topping them with onions and cheese. Then starting in the 7th grade, I went a good 25 yrs where I couldn’t and wouldn’t even consider going anywhere near a hot dog. Fast forward to only 2 or 3 years ago, and suddenly hot dogs are back on the approved list. I can’t explain it, but I know we’ve gotta get while the getting is good before I get the hot dog ick again!
Today, we’re combining two classics…the good ol’ American hot dog with America’s favorite fast food staple. And let me tell you, it’s a match made in heaven!

We’re going to start by whipping up a quick big mac sauce. Now if you don’t have it in you to make a sauce from scratch (even though it’s really so easy), that’s totally ok. I absolutely love Franks burger squeeze sauce, and it honestly tastes like a big mac sauce but better. So this is a totally acceptable substitute if you need it. If you want to make your sauce from scratch, we’ll need some mayo, French dressing, ketchup, mustard, relish, and a little dried minced onion. Mix that all together and allow it to sit in the fridge for the flavors to marry while we work on everything else.

As far as the hot dogs go, I want you to make the hot dogs you like the way you like them. I like a beef hot dog on the grill. But if you prefer a pork weenie under the broiler or a chicken sausage from the skillet, you do you. If I’m honest, the hot dog really is just the supporting character with all the other goodies we have going on.

Now a classic piece of the standard Big Mac is a sesame seed bun. And I don’t know about you, but none of my grocery stores sell sesame seed hot dogs buns. (Now that I say that out loud, is that my million dollar idea???) We’re going to very easily turn a pack of $2 hot dog buns into something fancier by brushing them with a little melted butter then sprinkling some sesame seeds on top. We’re also going to open up the buns, layer a slice of American cheese into each bun, then pop the tray of buns into the oven for a couple minutes so the seeds can adhere, the cheese can melt, and the bun can get lightly toasted.

All that’s left to do is dress up our hot dogs. Layer in some shredded lettuce first. Then, the hot dog goes on top of that. Sprinkle the top with some diced onion, diced pickles, and a drizzle of our sauce. And that is Big Mac hot dogs!

Let me tell you, as someone that was once the president of the hot dog haters club, these hot dogs are soooooo satisfying. You have different textures from the soft bun to the crunchy veg to the gooey cheese. You have different flavors from the savory dog to the tangy sauce to the spicy onions. And let’s not forget that these are some of the prettiest hot dogs you’ll see too. They’re so good!
Up the ante at your summer bbqs this season by serving these big mac hot dogs by the platter. Trust me, they’ll be the hit of the summer!

Ok, everyone! I hope you love these as much as I do!
I hope you guys enjoy. And, let’s eat!

Big Mac Hot Dogs
Serves: 8 Print
Ingredients:
For the Mac Sauce:
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 ½ tbsp French dressing
1 ½ tbsp sweet relish
¾ tsp sugar
½ tsp dried minced onion
½ tsp white vinegar
½ tsp ketchup
½ tsp dijon mustard
pinch of salt
For the Hot Dogs:
8 hot dog buns
1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
½ tbsp sesame seeds
8 slices American cheese
2 cups shredded romaine lettuce
8 beef hot dogs, cooked according to your preference
½ cup onion, diced
½ cup pickles, diced
Directions:
Make the Mac Sauce: Add all ingredients for mac sauce to a small bowl. Stir well to combine. Cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper, and arrange buns on the baking sheet. Brush the tops of each bun with melted butter, and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Split the buns to open, and layer a slice of American cheese in each bun. Bake for 5 mins until the cheese is melted and the buns are lightly toasted.
To each hot dog bun, layer in lettuce, a hot dog, onions, pickles, and a drizzle of mac sauce. Serve with remaining mac sauce on the side, and enjoy!
Recipe notes:
*I prefer bread and butter pickles, but use whichever flavor you prefer.
*If you don’t feel like making the mac sauce, Franks burger squeeze sauce is absolutely delicious and makes a perfect store bought substitute.
*I like to cut the cheese in half diagonally, and arrange the slices next to each other in the bun to cover more surface area.
