Today, we’re making Green Beans in French Onion Cream Sauce!

I know having a favorite recipe as a blogger is the equivalent to having a favorite child. But, I’m just going to say it. I think what we’re making today is my favorite recipe of the series. And that’s saying a lot because all the recipes in this series are real bangers.

We all know that green bean casserole is my favorite thing on the Thanksgiving table. And we all know the GBC has some real haters out there. I don’t understand it! Consider today’s recipe the one to convert the haters. It’s kind of like a deconstructed green bean casserole minus the mushrooms and time commitment. Because this one comes together in just about 10 mins!

We’re going to start with some fresh green beans. I know frozen or canned green beans might be easier, but I promise you that fresh green beans are the move. To save yourself a little time, you can spend a couple extra cents to buy the green beans pre-trimmed, so make that compromise if you have to.

We’ll blanch the green beans by boiling them in salted water for 5 minutes, transferring them directly to ice water for 10 seconds, then transferring them again to a clean kitchen towel to dry. It’s quick, simple, and so worth it for buying the fresh veg.

While the beans are boiling, we can work on our creamy sauce. We’re going to pull out that caramelized onion jam again that we used in our stuffing, and let that be the base of our sauce. So, that can go directly in a small saucepan until it starts to sizzle. Then, we’re going to add in some heavy cream, a sprinkle of parmesan, a pinch of salt and pepper, and one extra special ingredient: French onion whipped cream cheese.

This ingredient might seem like a flyer. We’re only using a tablespoon of it in this recipe, and we’re not using it again for this series. But if you like breakfast, it won’t go to waste. It’s so delicious and it really helps us double down on the onion vibes of our sauce while also helping to act as a thickener.

We’ll pretty constantly stir our sauce until all the cheeses have melted. Then, we’ll let it simmer for only a minute or two until that sauce thickens up a smidge. And that’s all the work we have to do!

Arrange your dried off green beans on a serving platter, drizzle that luscious creamy onion sauce all over the top of the beans, then finish the whole thing off with a sprinkle of French fried onions for some texture and crunch.

These green beans are heavenly. The sauce is rich and creamy and oniony and the slightest bit sweet. It’s oh so glorious. Combine that with the bright green beans and the classic GBC crispy topping, and you have yourself quite the delicious bite. The way I could eat these every day and not look back…mmmmm!

Next up, we’re making a slightly varied version of our favorite mashed potatoes. So, I’ll see you then!

I hope you guys enjoy! And, let’s eat!

Green Beans in French Onion Cream Sauce

Serves: 4          Print

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb green beans, trimmed

  • 1 tbsp salt, plus more to taste

  • 2 tbsp caramelized onion jam (I use Divina)

  • ½ cup heavy cream

  • 1 tbsp shredded parmesan

  • 1 tbsp whipped French onion cream cheese

  • pepper, to taste

  • 2 tbsp French fried onions

Directions:

  1. Blanch the green beans: Bring a large pot of water along with 1 tbsp salt to a boil. Add green beans, and cook for 5 minutes. Immediately transfer green beans to ice water for 10-15 seconds, then remove and drain. Transfer to a clean kitchen towel to dry completely.

  2. Add onion jam to a small saucepan over medium heat. When onions start to sizzle, add heavy cream, parmesan, cream cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until cheeses have completely melted. Bring to a simmer, and simmer for 2-3 mins until the sauce has thickened. Remove from heat.

  3. Arrange green beans on a serving platter. Drizzle with cream sauce. Sprinkle French fried onions over the top. Serve immediately.

Recipe notes:

*I get the caramelized onion jam from Amazon. It’s so good and a huge shortcut ingredient!
